Culinary history
A short food history of San Francisco
The Gold Rush of 1849 turned a small settlement into a city overnight, and it fed its miners with sourdough bread, Italian fish stews and Cantonese cooking. San Francisco's Chinatown, established in the 1850s, is among the oldest in North America.
In the Mission, Mexican and Central American families built the city's taqueria culture. Today its cooking leans on the farms, vineyards and Pacific fisheries a short drive away.
