We finally had the chance to try Caravaggio on the Upper East Side today. While we prefer the atmosphere of Caravaggio's UES sister restaurant Sistina a little more, the food and service here were both really good.
I would say to watch out for the wine list though as it is outrageously priced. The wine menu in particular is at a pricing level that makes it one of the most expensive at any restaurant in NYC. While we enjoyed our visit, this was a one and done experience soley due to the ridiculously priced wine selection.
It was absolute perfection. For a brief evening, it truly felt like being transported to Italy, with every detail capturing that effortless elegance. Each dish on the menu was cooked and presented flawlessly, bursting with fresh, authentic flavors that made every bite memorable. The venue itself is beautiful, radiating warmth and genuine care in every corner, with a timeless charm that instantly puts you at ease. The service was simply outstanding—attentive, gracious, and sincere. I couldn’t have wished for a better dinner. It was a classic, wonderful experience that left me already dreaming of the next visit.
FOOD POISONING: Let's start from the beginning. BTW - they want the entire order all at the same time. At least let's get the apps ordered while we think about the entrees. No can do. We were seated at a table with a wet table cloth.
After informing the captain we were moved to a different table. We all (4) of us ordered starters. I ordered the special asparagus soup with a little crab meat. It wasn't bad but very expensive. Since this was a special there was no price on the menu for this soup. Not until the check came did I know the Asparagus soup was $40. Where are we? My wife ordered the special mushroom soup which didn't taste right so she sent it back. The other two guests shared a salad with no complaints. Now come the entrees. My daughter's mushroom ravioli came with an insect in it. Returned the dish and they supposedly remade it. Who really knows what goes on in this kitchen? Anyway all I can tell you at this point is that when we got home from dinner none of us felt well.
Stomach cramps. We all threw up dinner and had diarrhea into the next day. We go out quite often and I must tell you this is as expensive as it gets. We will never return to this establishment. Good luck if you decide to go here after reading this.
There is just so much more care in everything they do at this restaurant….We felt extremely special being guests at this restaurant. Well, we felt like what we are - part of the neighbourhood community. Everyone was so attentive. Tony in particular is an icon! We were there for a late lunch. I had the watermelon mojito and it was made with fresh watermelon. The bartender checked in personally whether I liked it or not. It’s so rare for such great service to occur! My cocktail had a perfect level of alcohol, freshness and sweetness. The food was interesting but not in a way that it is fussy. It just felt healthy and made with an absolute sense of care that you felt in every bite. The individual tastes of the varied ingredients were exquisite. You could tell that the owner personally developed the bread recipe. The air holes and bounciness of the bread were to be admired! The octopus and seared calamari left me waking up this morning with a wish to go back for dinner right this evening. Oh, I should mention that we also had a delicious gluten free clam pasta and a great mixed salad. It’s the combination of exquisite homemade food made with love and sprinkled with care that should make you want to go there.
We had the great pleasure to dine at Caravaggio during Restaurant Week this winter. We had never been to Caravaggio and had dined in several fine restaurants during restaurant week but Caravaggio had THE BEST pre fix menu. So we wanted to experience it. It feels like an old school New York restaurants with attentive and well trained staff. Not only was the food impressive but the service was remarkable from start to finish. Gerardo greeted us at the door and checked our coats. He welcomed us with a smile and immediately offered us a cocktail. It felt like we had stepped inside someone’s private home. The setting is sooo intimate. No attitude or snootiness anywhere. Samuel , the head waiter is a consummate host and gentleman who explained the menu to us and checked on us throughout the meal. And thank you to our server, Ervis for his pleasant personality and attentiveness. For my meal, I had the Prince Edward Island Mussels, the Lasagna bolognese and the Profiteroles for dessert. Every course was expertly prepared ,extremely delicious and the portions quite generous. I actually had to take food home because it was a substantial 3 course affair. The profiteroles were served with vanilla ice cream and among the most delicious I’ve ever had. There was nothing in our experience but perfection from start to finish. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant
