It is unfortunate that I have to leave a negative review, but I will not be returning to Connie’s.
I visited around 6:30 PM today, feeling excited to try a historic Chicago restaurant after moving closer to Bridgeport. Our server was great, but the interaction I had with the manager left such a bad impression that I won't be back.
We ordered a sample platter, which came out quickly and hot. However, upon taking my first bite of the calamari, it smelled and tasted absolutely foul. It had a rotten, fishy odor and aftertaste that completely threw me off.
I grew up eating seafood, have eaten seafood from different cuisines all around the world, and know exactly what fresh seafood should taste like. Even when frozen, there shouldn’t be any rotten smell and aftertaste whatsoever. This was absolutely unacceptable.
The worst part, however, happened when the manager came to check on our table. She dismissively told us, "I completely understand if you’re not used to the smell since you haven’t had it before, and it doesn’t taste like anything similar to you."
Given that my table consisted entirely of people of color, this statement felt patronizing and carried an offensive, underlying connotation. It would be understandable if she thought that I never had calamari before, but to say this even after I told her I have had this dish at many different establishments, all over the world reflects extremely poorly on leadership and the establishment’s food safety standard as a whole. You need to do better.
I can't believe it took us so long to give them a try. The deep dish pizza blew everyone else out the water. The shrimp diavolo was so creamy and rich. We also got some appetizers and I love that the BBQ chicken wasn't too sweet or salty, they hit the balance just right.
We're definitely making this place one of our regular spots.
Astrid is truly the heart of this place. Came for dinner and everything from the drinks to the food and her service was amazing 😌 Every time I come in and see that she’s my server, I already know I’m about to have an amazing experience. She is incredibly attentive and genuine!
On top of that, the food here is always consistently delicious, and the entire atmosphere brings such a strong sense of nostalgia for me. But Astrid is what really elevates each visit 🙂 I always leave happy and already looking forward to my next visit. If you get Astrid as your server, you’re in for a good experience!
Great experience! Went on a Saturday night when the entertainment was playing. Great musician. Great atmosphere. Got appetizers. The spinach dip was amazing! I was expecting it to be chunky and it wasn’t. It was smooth and very easy to eat which I appreciate! Fries were fresh and delicious! Ordered a margarita on the rocks. Wasn’t too sweet and it didn’t taste like syrup, so yah! People in my group ordered beer and other drinks on the menu. We got multiple rounds. Ordered large deep dish and it was delicious and very filling! Highly recommend. Others in my group ordered pasta and they loved it!
