Key Information
Kontrast is a two Michelin-starred restaurant in Oslo that explores the boundaries of modern Nordic cooking, building on common culinary roots while pushing past New Nordic trends. It focuses on sustainability, using exceptional ingredients such as wild, line-caught fish, organic or wild meat, and almost all other ingredients are organic and produced in Norway. The restaurant offers a multi-course tasting menu experience in a modern setting with an open kitchen.
Customers generally describe Kontrast as an impressive fine dining experience with appealing and well-presented dishes. The service is frequently praised as high-ended, attentive, and knowledgeable, with fantastic non-alcoholic pairings. While many dishes are considered outstanding with layers of flavors, some reviewers found certain dishes to be inconsistent, trying too hard to be inventive, or underwhelming. Pacing between courses can be slow, and some found the ambiance a bit generic or bland. The high price point (over 3,000 KR per person) led some to question the overall value for a return visit, despite the overall positive experience.
Additional Details
The restaurant places a strong emphasis on sustainability, sourcing wild, line-caught fish, organic or wild meat, and nearly all other ingredients organically from Norway. They also practice recycling. Diners can observe the chefs at work in the open kitchen.
My kid and I went here for our first meal, in our first Europe travel and our first time in Norway. We decided to do it in a fine dining experience to celebrate the trip before anything happened. Just say it was impressive from beginning to the end. It’s a lot of course menu non stop for sure. First we were greet and sat at the couch where the pre appetizers were served. Then we were escorted to our table in the middle of the room overlooks the open kitchen, where you can see a dozen of chefs/sour chefs prepared the foods. Just say that all dishes are very appealing and well presented. Majority of dishes are definitely a hit and just couple are just unsure since my pallet didn’t quite welcomed the dishes. Services are so high ended, very attentive and knowledgeable. I got wines & champagne to go with the course and it was fantastic. The place is modern, minimal decor but goes well with Nordic atmosphere and in certain way, warm. My kid enjoyed it quite a bit, with all dishes with 3 different desserts plus one for my birthday so he was over the moon. He gave it a 2 thumbs up for overall experiences. Definitely an event not to forget.
The not so good: One of us doesn't eat anything from the sea; first dish = shrimp. (Corrected quickly, but a later dish had seaweed leaves.) Some of the dishes were trying so hard to be inventive that they were just a mish-mash of flavors trying to break through.
Pacing was really bad; we waited 30 mins before anything happened, on uncomfortable seats - and then it took 20-25 mins per course, with wine pairings poured about half way through, so the cool wines warmed up to room temperature before the food arrived. Water was extra, which seemed inappropriate, as was a debit card charge.
The good: when the dishes were good, they were truly outstanding; layers of flavors. Presentation was amazing. Some of the wine pairings were wonderful (despite the attempt to find corner cases from the middle of nowhere). The non-alcoholic pairing was fantastic. The staff was friendly and approachable and attentive.
The service was impeccable. We really like the first bites that we had the best, but overall the meal was good. Compared to other two star Michelin restaurants, we thought this was good, but it wasn’t our favorite.
We had an overall enjoyable experience at Kontrast. Several dishes stood out for their bold and well-executed flavours—particularly the Parmesan tart and duck crème brûlée from the snacks, as well as the scallops, lobster tail, and vegetable main course.
However, not all dishes hit the mark. Some lacked balance, and a few were underwhelming in execution. The chicken main, despite the creative attempt to prepare the breast in multiple ways, turned out dry and at times difficult to chew. The sourdough bread, which had an intriguing backstory of a 12-year fermentation process, unfortunately tasted rather average.
That said, we ended the night on a high note with their inventive Jerusalem artichoke dessert, which was both surprising and satisfying.
Service throughout the evening was attentive, and the staff shared just the right amount of detail about each dish to keep us engaged and curious.
For the price you pay (>$3,000 KR per person), though, we're not sure it offered enough value to justify a return visit.
This was not a meal but an experience. We tried the tasting menu which is roughly a 12 to 14 course meal of Norwegian origin. You start with a 4 course amuse-bouche, wine and cocktails. The attendants were superb and friendly. The atmosphere however was a bit generic and bland and not warm. A bit of decoration, lower light, and candles would have made the experience warmer, especially with the cold temperatures outside. Thank you for NOT having music. Overall an excellent experience.
