This bar what is a little underwhelming if I would say so. I was told by the bartenders that when the Congress is in session people will come over there and sit at the bar and discuss things. There are some good history here and if you are around here you should stop by.
Went here for a quick drink during our stay. Drinks were fairly well made classics within the glass and what you would expect to pay at a luxury, historic site in downtown DC on the surface. The glasses themselves were not what you would expect. Of the 3 drinks ordered two came in obviously chipped glasses. A let down and concern in a place that prides itself on service. Glassware in good condition should be a standard for the most basic bar program. It was fairly busy in the small establishment, but the bartenders may need some help with small talk. They hardly spoke with anyone while working which seemed like a strange move for a small, circular bar that is so clearly meant to encourage social interaction. Anything beyond the transaction would go a long way. Cool historic space, but you can get good classic cocktails for less with much better service elsewhere in DC. Was let down.

Loved this bar. It’s quiet and exudes its history. You can feel it.
I wanted the barrel aged old fashioned, but they were not ready, so the bartender made me an OF using Michters Rye. It was outstanding! You could capture the rye and bitters as they were distinct from the syrup. Wonderful!
Highly recommend.

In research, you'll see scientists put their heads together over drinks. The atmosphere is relaxing, the music is present yet in the background, they'll be in a nook where they can forget the outside world for a bit. This was what the bar was like for me. With two benefits: (a) excellent drinks and (b) Thatcher who not only made them for us, but also turns out to be a comp sci major with social skills. (Not my strong suit like most techies which is why the rare unicorn catches my attention.)
