Key Information
Mayhew Bakery was an artisan bakery in New Orleans, founded by U.S. Army veteran Kelly Mayhew. It initially operated as a walk-up window in Old Metairie before expanding to a full bakery in the Faubourg St. John neighborhood at 3201 Orleans Avenue in late 2019. The bakery was known for its high-quality baked goods and was recognized as a 'neighborhood hero' after Hurricane Ida. It closed in August 2022 due to increasing operational challenges.
Customer Perception
When operational, customers praised Mayhew Bakery for its 'spectacular biscuits' which were described as flaky, fresh, and flavorful. Their baguettes and cookies also received positive mentions.
Kelly Mayhew, an Army veteran, pursued culinary school after being wounded in Iraq. He previously worked as a sous chef at Brennan's and as a corporate baker for Ralph Brennan before opening Mayhew Bakery. The bakery's closure in 2022 was attributed to the increasing difficulties of running the business.
The bakery is permanently closed. Historically, King Cake would have been a popular item during the Mardi Gras season.

This joint has been putting out great food since 1982!! Then sometime after the storm THE King Cake arrived through their bakery and blew the doors off of what King Cake could be!! The word spread fast, far and wide that this was THE King Cake that you needed in your life and it definitely lives up to the hype!! The lines can be long, and you have to get there early, but it is worth the wait. Otherwise, you'll get the dreaded "SOLD OUT" sign on the barricade in front of the warehouse.
I look forward to this every Mardi Gras since I was introduced to this king cake many years ago. That fluffy icing, and sort of hybrid croissant vibe of the cake and that cream cheese stuffing oozes complete total utter decadence!! It's that good!!
And don't sleep on the Bahn Mi's the best in the city. Let's put it this way, everybody else that serves Bahn Mi's get their bread from here!!
These kats work their tails off every year to cater to the demand for this awesome food. We thank you and we appreciate all the hard work y'all put in every year. As a born and raised resident of the greater New Orleans area, I will always give them my business every year!!

We decided to make this bakery our destination while visited NOLA. Truly a superior French bread and tasty Bahn Mi. Great selection of great bakery and they take great pride in the offerings.
The only down side was the neighborhood of this restaurant. Do not give anything to the organized professional Panhandles. They were driven here to ask for help from the public.
Other than that, this restaurant is truly a great place to have some superior Vietnamese food.
Food is much better than I remembered a decade ago. I always liked their baked goods but here I am and enjoying everything.
The shaken beef is a little sweet/tangy but still great. The spring roll was good so 4 star. The pho soup is soulful and tasty, an easy 5 star.
Bang mi is great. Excellent bread, 5 star. Cold cut and the shrimp patty are 4 star. Egg tart is 4.5 star so rounded up to a 5 star. The pandan cake is soft and flavorful, 5 star — not too sweet but sweet enough by Asian standards, perfect. Cafe su da is a good 4 star. Overall for the experience and food, an easy 5 star.
Fast and friendly service that made us feel very welcome. The crawfish pie was amazing; I ended up buying more right after trying it the first time. The filling was well-balanced, flavorful, and spicy—perfect for those who love spicy food.
Dong Phuong Bakery - this was our first time getting a king cake from Dong Phuong. It quickly became our favorite king cake we had all year. And even though I am two hours away, I'm making it a point to grab another one this year.
