I recently visited Oak & Reel for my birthday after hearing a lot of great things, so I went in with fairly high expectations. Not in a picky or critical way, just expecting an exceptional meal based on the restaurant’s reputation.
First, the positives. The ambiance is beautiful. The space feels thoughtfully designed and the overall atmosphere makes it a great place for a special occasion. The service throughout the evening was also very good. I also really appreciated the effort they put into their non-alcoholic offerings. As someone who doesn’t drink, it was refreshing to see multiple mocktails, two alcohol-removed wines, and even a non-alcoholic beer available. Many restaurants still overlook this, so it definitely stood out.
We started with the olive focaccia and the carciofi alla giudia. The olive focaccia was one of the highlights of the meal for me and had great flavor and texture.
For the main courses, my friend ordered the bucatini and I ordered the tortelli. I was a bit surprised by how limited the vegetarian entrée options were, so we also added sides of the marinated mushrooms and hearth potatoes.
Unfortunately this is where the experience became more mixed. The tortelli was fairly underwhelming. It wasn’t bad, but it lacked both substance and flavor and didn’t feel like a standout dish. The bucatini was good according to my friend, but not particularly memorable.
The marinated mushrooms were the most disappointing item. They were extremely tough to the point that I had to ask for a steak knife just to cut them, and even then they were difficult to chew. I ultimately sent them back because of that.
The hearth potatoes also weren’t great. The texture itself was fine, but they had a flavor that made it seem like the fryer oil may have been due for a change.
For dessert we had the delizie. I did enjoy the sauce on this dish, but overall the dessert itself was fairly unremarkable.
In the end, the meal simply didn’t live up to the level I was hoping for given the restaurant’s reputation. Nothing was outright bad, and the service and atmosphere were both excellent, but the food itself didn’t feel exceptional compared with other restaurants in the area.
I’m not opposed to returning at some point, but since I tried most of the vegetarian options available and wasn’t particularly impressed, I’m not sure what would draw me back. Still, I appreciate the thoughtful atmosphere and the effort put into accommodating non-alcoholic drink options.
This Italian seafood restaurant was okay overall. The dishes were decent, and the seafood tasted fresh, but nothing really stood out or felt memorable. The pasta and sauces were fine, though I was expecting a bit more flavor for an Italian seafood spot. The atmosphere was really good and with ample parking, and the service was phenomenal . It’s ok to try once for the experience. Make sure to book a reservation i advance as they get busy on weekends.
Food was good and flavorful. Portions seemed on the small side. I got the pasta and had to get 2 orders to make a big bowl full. Prices were high for what you got. I wanted to order the steak but 63 dollars for a 8 ounce steak feels a bit much. I got a dessert and again great taste but 16 dollars was a bit much for the amount you got
I feel like there were trying to be top class but the atmosphere and setting didn't match the prices. Just my opinion. If you want good food then go here but just expect high prices for them.
Took a date here this weekend and loved the experience.
We both got the all day Sunday happy hour and found a new red wine we absolutely love. I got the salad and buccatini, date got the grilled octopus and short rib pasta dish.
We were originally seated at the bar but it got crowded and loud quickly. When we asked to move to a quiet table, they got us situated at one effortlessly without skipping a beat.
Great food, great treatment, and overall the best experience I could have hoped for when taking a date out for a special night.
Easily one of the best (the best?) meals. Of. My. Life.
Worth the drive, worth the… everything. Presentation, atmosphere, staff, all wonderful. So thrilled that you’ve brought your talents to Detroit!!! We will absolutely be back.
Not at all a food writer but here’s my lay-woman’s description (spoiler alert: everything was to die for).
Carciofo alla giudia - incredible, with the most beautifully delicate shavings of pecorino, so fine that they were fluffy
Crostini - delightful, shockingly light (in the best way- didn’t feel like a “heavy” plate) and great for a warm day, was there a note of citrus?
Lumache- I have no words (except “more please”), wonderful
Bucatini- light and lemony, perfect amount of pecorino where there was a cheese flavor but it wasn’t like CHEESE
Swordfish spiedino- 🤌🏻 dense but again not heavy, smooth and slightly buttery, a tiny bit smoky? The escarole was perfect, not limp, and the taggiasca were a treat
Zaba d’agrumi- smooth, sweet, not too rich
Bomboloni- with espresso? YES. Sweet. Light. Beautiful.
Wine: grillo- Mary Taylor Clara Sala
