Cheung Hing Kee is a renowned street food spot in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, famous for its Shanghai Pan-fried Buns (Sheng Jian Bao). The buns are celebrated for their crispy bottom, soft top, and juicy, flavorful soup filling. The food is cooked fresh in front of customers, offering a lively and authentic culinary experience.
Customer Perception
Customers consistently praise the deliciousness of the pan-fried buns, highlighting their crispy exterior and succulent, soup-filled interior. The classic and truffle versions are particularly popular, with some also enjoying the spicy and numbing variant. While queues can form, they are generally fast-moving, and the service is efficient. Many consider it among the best bao they've tasted, appreciating the good value for the quality.
The restaurant offers a quintessential Hong Kong street food experience, with many customers eating standing up or taking their food to go. Small portions, starting at 4 pieces, are available, allowing visitors to try different varieties.
There can be lines, especially during peak hours or prior to opening, but they tend to move quickly (around 8-10 minutes for 10 people). It's a quick-service spot, suitable for a fast and satisfying meal or snack.
We came here twice just to have their pan-fried dumplings. We ordered the crab roe and meat pan-fried dumplings, and they were amazing.
The dumplings were served hot, and when you bite into them, be careful as the hot soup inside will burst out. The combination of the crispy outer layer, juicy filling, and rich flavour made it one of the best pan-fried dumplings I've ever had.
The service was also very efficient. We received our order within about 5 minutes, which was impressive considering how busy the place can be.
If you're visiting Hong Kong, this is definitely a must-try spot for pan-fried dumplings. Highly recommended!
A seriously delicious fried bao spot that left a great impression. I visited twice, and luckily the queue wasn’t too long either time.
I tried both the signature and the truffle versions, and really enjoyed both. The outer layer was fried to a beautiful crisp, while inside was juicy pork and flavorful soup that burst out with every bite. The contrast between the crispy exterior and the rich, savory filling made them incredibly satisfying.
Definitely a place worth stopping by if you get the chance.
Candidly underwhelming, especially with the value proposition given the pricing and quantity of food. Suggest a takeout/pick up order to avoid queing in line, but not necessary since lines were inconsistent, even around 7 pm.
Lots of hype, but the food was rather mediocre. Food tends to sit around (unless there is a fresh round), so everything was room temperature. The buns have a crispy bottom and the dough has a pleasant chew, but it was underwhelming.
My critique: The soup was good, but for more than half of the baos, they were punctured and thus had no soup. Also, the crab roe was NOT worthwhile, and there was hardly any filling.
Crab noodles were rich and bouncy, but can be skipped. If you do get it, suggest pairing with vinegar.
Not much seating. There’s a countertop on the exterior of the shop, but it is standing only.
After eating several bao in the city, I had to say this is the best one. Crispy bottom, soft upper and the meat is well make an so juicy and tasty. Plenty of type choices of bao. Yes there is a line prior opening but rather move quickly. Great & helpful service. It’s a small shop in the strip mall but got the street side and the mall walkway so easy to see and get the foods. If you enjoy or love crispy bao, this is it.
Worth it for the Michelin-level taste!
If you're looking for a fancy, pristine restaurant, this isn't it. The shop isn't very clean or convenient, but it has a small counter if you want to stand and eat right there. However, the food absolutely lives up to its multi-year Michelin reputation. The taste is fantastic! It totally does the job for a quick, delicious bite on the go.
